Male Polish and Man-e-cures
It’s no surprise that some of the leading male Hollywood A-listers get their nails professionally done. In fact, Ryan Seacrest swears by a routine manicure and recommends it for one of the staples of a successful individual. But there is a more interesting and alluring trend of men sporting varnished nails that not only looks cool but helps break down gender stereotypes. An article from European GQ covers this topic a bit and I have seen it just pop up in the August 2020 issue of American GQ magazine as well. It can be seen on male artists, musicians, actors, or just now emerging as a sort of “accessory”. Think of it as a the latest in male fashion trends, like an added bracelet, ring, or necklace as a statement piece.
Self-care is very important, even and especially during these current times, so why not treat yourself to a manicure! You do not necessarily have to leave the house to be able to get spa-quality nails. I have been doing my own manicures for years and usually like to sport my pinky-nails painted in a color of the moment. While I am not a nail technician, I can provide you with the basic info on how I get my nails looking fresh.
1. Gather a clippers (or preferred method of trimming your nails), file, and a 3-7 sided nail buffer. The nail buffers come in various assortments but my favorite are the ones that are 7 sided and affixed to a soft foam core.
2. Trim and file nails to your preferred length and shape
3. Use the medium/fine side of multi-sided buffer to buff ridges or lines out of nails
4. Use a medium/fine side of nail file or edge of multi-sided buffer to trim away excess cuticle (skin around the nail)
5. Followed number buffing grits on multi-sided buffer to achieve desired shine
6. Rinse away the nail dust
7. Apply your favorite nail enamel, any combo goes!
All nails, just a couple nails, different colors, the sky is the limit! Enjoy and have fun!
